I get asked all the time, “What is the best thing I can do for my engine?
Whether it’s a 4-wheeler, go-kart, motorcycle, mower or weedeater, I always say, “Clean your air filter.”
A clean air filter keeps the engine safe and running well. It prevents dirt and trash from getting in the engine and if dirt and debris does get in the engine, it wears the engine out prematurely, which means you are facing a repair bill or buying a new one.
Cleaning air filters isn’t fun. I know that. You are busy and just want to hop on your machine and go. On some units, you can simply take off the old filter, buy a new one, and install it. Others need to be cleaned with solvents or soap and water, or both. Consult your owner’s manual.
Also, your machine will run better with a clean air filter. Engines need air, just like you do. Put a clothes pin on your nose and run around the block. It won’t feel too good and that is what it’s like for an engine to starve or air.
If you operate in dusty conditions, clean or replace the air filter more often. It’s much cheaper than rebuilding your motor!
